Take Me Out to the Ball Game

This Saturday is Brayden's first official little league baseball game of the year. I. AM. STOKED.

Spending our Spring and our Summer at the baseball field has pretty much made up the last 14 or so years of my life. Two of my three younger brothers played in the very same league and on the very same field. There is something about a sunny day mixed with the smell of dirt in the air and a bag of sweets from the concession stand that screams happiness to me.

Brayden started playing when he was only 5. That picture up there of him rounding the bases is of his very first game ever in April of 2008. It took to baseball immediately. I'd say that it was in his blood, but truth be told, Mike was a band nerd and I was a chorus nerd. His athletic ability and love for the game has come solely from his uncles.

Back when Brayden started out playing he was officially a "midget" player. The league is divided up into 3 groups of different age ranges. This year, however, Brayden is on an all new team with new kids and a new coach after moving up an age group. Not all of the kids move up immediately, they have to try out and be picked up by a team before they age out at 8 years old and automatically move up. It's a pretty big deal to move up early and it's hard to do especially with everyone a year older than you moving up. It only leaves a small handful of spots open for the younger kids. We went into this year fully expecting another year on the Twins (Brayden's old team) but leave it to our little baseball star to be one of the few kids to move up and play with the older kids as a "minor".

This year will will officially retire the orange shirt and hat in favor of a green one. Tomorrow the sun will be shinning, the kids will be playing, and I will be enjoying a day filled with baseball. And I can't wait.

I can't wait until my babies are old enough to start playing sports. I want to be the mom that brings snacks for all of the players, and surprises a fellow team mate on their birthday with balloons. I remember playing sports when I was younger, and how much fun I had at game time, even though I was TERRIBLE at whatever it was that I was playing. I hope my kids are more athletic than I was.

Your pictures just brought back a flood of memories.
