Tuesdays Unwrapped

It time for Tuesdays Unwrapped again! Something I discovered over at chatting at the sky.

The goal of this is to tell a story or post a photo documenting your messy, lovely, unexpected gifts of the small and ordinary nature and to unwrap your daily gift :) Beautiful right?

I'm a city girl. I've always been a city girl. Somehow, however, I got stuck in suburbia.

I grew up in Virginia Beach, literally right on the ocean. Even though that was forever ago not a day goes by where I don't miss it, all of it. I don't just mean burying my toes in the sand and splashing in the waves, but also the hustle and bustle of the city around where I lived.

Where we live now there is literally not a whole lot here. A Wal-Mart, that's really about it. And I loathe anything and everything having to do Wal-Mart.

But living in suburbia does have its perks. Its a safe and an amazing place to raise children for one, which is probably Mike and Is biggest selling point on staying here. Both of our families live within miles of us, which is always pretty fabulous when Mom and Dad need an evening to themselves and there's a grandparent nearby ready and willing to spoil the heck out of the boys for a few hours. And there is always free entertainment. Snowman building in the winter, leaf pile jumping in the fall, and in the Spring and Summer when the sun is shining there are so many wooded trails and paths to follow that will lead you straight into the beauty of nature.

My husband agreed to look after his Great Uncles house while his family was on their vacation, grab the mail, check the dehumidifiers, you know the basics. Mike's great uncle lives on 9 or so acres of gorgeous rustic land filled with fields, ponds, wild flowers, trees, you name it. While taking a drive on the property the other day I thought that I spotted two little ears poking up from the tall grass in one of the fields. Mike, of course told me that I was crazy and seeing things, which of course ignited the "Oh yeah, I'll show you!" flame inside of me. And so we went into the field to check it out.

To our surprise a tiny, baby fawn was laying in the grass. We (well, I) "oooh"ed and "ahhh"ed for a minute or two and then snapped a quick picture before leaving for its mother to come back, who was probably scared off by Mike and I.

As much as I miss it, I'm not so sure if city life is all I made it out to be anymore. Sometimes you just have to open you eyes wide enough to see the beauty of where you are right here and now. And anyways, the only place other than the country that I know of where you can get that up close and personal with a living animal is the zoo and maybe Petco, neither of which have such sweet baby deer.

That's just so beautiful! We are lucky here, we live in a city but have the countryside and the beach on our doorstep too. Your blog's really interesting :0)

It's so funny how much you and I have in common. I grew up in California, always near water, and city life. But over the years of moving to Washington, and now living in Oregon... nature and it's peace have won my heart. ♥
