The Highlights of Getting Highlights

Every Memorial Day weekend Mike's grandma has a big weekend long picnic of sorts at her house. She lives right on the Juniata River where there is plenty of swimming, fishing, canoeing, and splashing in the murky water. Most of his side of the family is there every year, relaxing, catching up, and having fun. Some people stay with her in the house, some people bunk out on her big screened in wrap around porch, some people pitch tents in the yard, and some people, like us, who live fairly close go home for the night and come back the next day.

The entire time we're there we try to stay outdoors, and that means that a lot of things that you would normally do inside are done outside.

This picture was taken in 2006 and includes one of the best people I know, Mike's cousin's wife, Emily (who just so happens to be one of my very best friends). Mike's sister, who was just finishing up cosmetology school was also there and offered to highlight our hair. In the woods. With nothing but tinfoil. And a hose.

And for some odd reason, we agreed. Our hair turned out gorgeous when everything was said and done, but the process to get to that point was a little less than stellar. Together, Emily and I sat around our friends and family in the woods with tinfoil in our hair for an hour. We sort of looked like we were protecting our brains from aliens with bugs were swarming around our faces, attracted by the smell of the dye. When it was time to rinse we set up a lawn chair and grabbed the hose. Playing with a hose and getting wet is so amazing in the summer, really it is. But in Pennsylvania in late May it's often only in the high 60's to low 70's and blasting ice cold hose water over your head is not fun.

Even though the process kind of stunk, we laughed the whole time about the absurdity of it all and ended up with a funny picture and some awesome highlights.

How funny that you guys did the highlight beauty session in the woods :) I wonder if the skunks thought that friends had moved in...hee hee! I think it's awesome you and Mike's cousin are such great friends. I wish I had friends like that on my hubby's side of the family.

That rocks girl! Growing up in the country myself, I know all about the glory of the hose! Many, many times I would have to bring a bucket of hot water out and mix it with hose water for my own little "country bath" when our water pump would break for our house. I can hear the banjos playing now....

As long as the hair turns out good, don't matter how country it is, girl!
