2001 Love Story

I was 17 years old when I met Mike. And if you had asked me back then, I thought that I looked hot, what with my garage sale chic "vintage" shirt, my bad perm, my bleached out bangs, and my super long metallic purple hooker fingernails. Yeah ... I was most definitely hot stuff.

Mike was no better, that's for certain. His hair was long, halfway down his back and although you can't see it in this picture, it has dyed fire engine red streaks running through it. I thought he was the hottest thing that I had ever laid eyes on back then. I still do, in fact.

The story of how Mike and I met is actually a funny one. I was in high school and working at one of those horribly embarrassing jobs that are a right of passage at that age. I was the Burger King clown (its ok, you can laugh) and while still in full costume I was helping out after a birthday party I was hosting was through and was working the drive thru window. Mike and a few of his friends thought that it would funny to walk through the drive thru ... and that is how we met for the first time, with me dressed up in the most ridiculous outfit ever, which included a bright yellow wig and face painted flowers on my cheeks, and him getting yelled at by the Burger King manager for being a "loitering teenager".

Later that night, I was online on aol instant messenger, which was all the rage in 2001 ... trust me on that one, and Mike randomly IMed me. We had made the Burger King connection and he asked me out the following night.

And I stood him up.
(Truthfully I called him and told him I couldn't make it ... he just never got the message. We still argue over whether or not I stood him up way back then to this day ... almost 9 years later).

We've come a long way since then. Mike hair is normal nowadays and I haven't sported those hooker nails since that picture was taken (or metallic purple nail polish for that matter!). But today, almost 9 years later, we're still just as madly in love as we were way back then. And he's the only man I'd ever stick my head out of a drive through window in a yellow wig for.

Wow! You must've looked pretty good... wig and all... if he randomly IM'd you and asked you out! I remember IM'ing all of the time back in those days. That was before cellphones and texting were very popular! So my question is... why did you call off that first date? hehe

I think that is a super adorable pic :) And a great story! When I worked at Sears my Sr year in high school, they made my dress up in one of those big Winnie the Pooh costumes...fake head and all. I thought I was going to pass out in it! I also remember working at Taco Bell for all of 5 minutes (well, make that two weeks) and walking out in my brown, polyester uniform and hairnet to throw out trash when 4 cute guys on mopeds (tourists for sure) drove up...and I wanted to DIE!

Ok. First of all, I think you do look hot in that picture. I think I had the same shirt.

Also, Christopher and I met at a drive through also. He was the night shift leader at Taco Bell, haha.

A very sweet story Amanda. I loved it.
